Baylor University is mourning the loss of its cherished bear mascot, Lady, who passed away peacefully at the age of 23. This remarkable American black bear has been more than just a mascot; she symbolized the spirit of Baylor and was a sign of commitment to stewardship, education, and conservation. Known for her playful and curious nature, Lady captured the hearts of students, alumni, and visitors alike during her time at the university.
Lady’s Life at Baylor
Lady lived a unique life at Baylor University, where she arrived in June 2002. Along with her sister Joy, who sadly passed away in 2022, Lady held the record as the longest-tenured bears at the school. Together, they became famous not only for being beloved mascots but also for their impact on wildlife education. They gained popularity through their adventures on social media and making TV appearances, bringing joy and education to many.
A Miracle Bear
- Lady overcame serious health challenges in 2019 and 2020, receiving unprecedented life-saving treatments.
- Those treatments were believed to be the first of their kind used on a black bear, showcasing the dedication of her caregivers.
Even after Joy’s passing, Lady continued to receive exceptional care from a loving team, who ensured she lived a life filled with comfort and happiness. In May 2023, Lady transitioned to a private facility to allow new cubs to join the Habitat, though she came back for special visits to the Baylor campus.
Active and Energetic
Throughout her life, Lady was known for her active, curious, and occasionally mischievous personality. She enjoyed enrichment activities, which kept her engaged and happy. Lady’s playful nature made her a favorite among students. She was often found comforting and entertaining people during campus events, reminding everyone of the importance of wildlife and conservation.
Honoring Lady’s Memory
Following her peaceful passing, Baylor University plans to honor Lady with a memorial on campus, where she will be cremated and remembered alongside her sister Joy. This memorial will serve as a lasting tribute to the joy and light that Lady brought into the lives of so many.

Those who wish to support the ongoing care of the Bear Habitat in honor of Lady can make memorial contributions through the Bear Habitat/Mascot Fund at baylor.edu/bear. A Legacy of Love and Learning
As Baylor University remembers Lady, they also celebrate the impact she and Joy have had on promoting wildlife education and conservation.
