The PIAA Basketball Championships Are Here!

This year, the PIAA is showcasing a fantastic lineup of teams and matchups. With seven Butler County teams participating, local fans have a lot to cheer for. Some notable games include North Catholic’s boys’ and girls’ teams hosting opening matches in Class 4A. The competition is fierce, and the stakes are high!

First-Round Matchups to Watch

  • Karns City girls’ team, three-time District 9 champions, will go up against Ellwood City on Friday.
  • On the boys’ side, Mars will face West York in Class 5A, while Hickory takes on North Catholic.
  • Knoch will be battling Cathedral Prep on Friday at the Hagerty Center in Class 4A.
  • The girls from Slippery Rock are set to clash with Oakland Catholic in their first-round matchup on Saturday.
  • Also, Penn-Cambria’s girls take on North Catholic Saturday in Class 4A.

Where to Catch the Games

Most of the first-round games will be hosted at local schools, giving home teams the advantage and their fans a place to show support. However, if gym sizes don’t allow, some games may be played at alternate locations. This year’s state championships will occur a week after the semifinals at the Giant Center in Hershey, a location as famous for basketball as it is for chocolate!

In addition to the exciting matchups, several returning champions are back, aiming to defend their titles. For example, Archbishop Wood’s girls’ team is striving for their fifth straight state title, while the boys of Imhotep Charter and Devon Prep are looking to make their mark in higher classifications this year. The PIAA basketball playoffs involve a total of twelve classifications, which means teams will faceoff over two days of action-packed games.
